Glass Blowing
The Scandinavian glass industry is over four hundred years old
and has long been synonymous with high-quality, refinement and originality. The rich northern forests provided the
essential raw elements: wood, fire and water. To produce glass of the highest quality, it is important to have an extremely high
grade of raw materials. Glass is made out of numerous ingredients the main ingredient being sand. To speed melting, soda and potash are added. Red lead can be added to enhance
luster. The exact recipe used for the melt at a given glassworks is a closely guarded secret. The most common technique
of working glass is mould-blowing, but some glass is also blown and shaped free-hand. Other techniques include casting, pressing and centrifuging. After slow cooling, the glass can be further worked with
other techniques such as cutting, engraving, etching, sandblasting and painting.
