Scandinavian National Days

The National Days
Swedish Flag Day, Svenska flaggans dag, was first celebrated on June 6th, 1916 at the Stadion arena in Stockholm. On the same day in 1523, Gustav Vasa, regarded as the founder of the Swedish nation, had come to Stockholm to be crowned king. Until then, Danish monarchs had largely ruled Sweden. Almost 300 years later, it was on this date in 1809 that Sweden adopted a new constitution that established the civil rights and liberties of Swedes. Later, in 1983, June 6th also became Sweden’s National Day.
Norway's National Day and Norway's Liberation Day are celebrated on May 17. It was on this day 1814 that both the country's declaration of independence, the Treaty of Kiel, and the triumph of constitutional government, the election of Christian Fredrik as the king of Norway, took place.
Finland declared independence from Russia and Sweden on December 6, 1917. For that reason, Finland's Independence Day is celebrated on the 6th of December.
June 5th marks Constitution Day for Danes. Denmark’s independence was first organized as a unified state in 10th century. Later in 1849 Denmark became a constitutional monarchy.
June 17 is Iceland's National Day. June 17, 1944. The Republic of Iceland is established at Thingvellir, following a referendum in which 97% of the population voted in favor of cutting ties with the Danish Crown.
