Christmas in Scandinavia
Advent is celebrated with the arrival of the season's first decoration full of joy and a burst of light. To dispel the gloom of the never-ending twilight of winter, the Scandinavians light thousands of candles. Christmas Eve, is the height of the festivities a day when no work should be done other than seeing to one's livestock. This is the day of the Christmas feast. In ancient times angels would come during the feast of Christmas to hide lucky barley stalks around the house. Julnisse is the mischievous elf who lives in the attic and plays jokes on one and all. he has now multiplied into a group of gnomes who come on Christmas Eve to bring gifts to good children. The Christmas goat (Julbock) made of straw is a very popular Christmas decoration. It is named for the goat that drew the cart of Thor, the god of thunder in Norse mythology.
